Montreal, Tuesday, September 9, 2003 — Today, during a press conference held at the Saint-Nom-de-Jésus Church, Régis ROUSSEAU, organist and artistic director of the event, announced the programming of the FIFTH FALL FESTIVAL ORGUE ET COULEURS. Since its foundation, ORGUE ET COULEURS has gained an enviable reputation that now goes well beyond the level of Montreal. For a fifth consecutive year, the Autumn Festival will pay tribute to the glory of the organ, its versatility, and the amazing abilities of the men and women who play it.

A diverse program of activities, unexpected encounters

The organ’s vast repertory will be showcased in performances by young virtuosi Felix HELL (Germany) and Vincent DUBOIS (France), winner of the Gold Medal at the Calgary International Organ Competition 2002; the organ will become the “czar of instruments” in a program of works by Russian composers, performed by British organist Iain QUINN alternating with the ALCAN Quartet; and it will be entertaining and spectacular during the first international organ improvisation match, a face-off between French organists and the team from TROIS-RIVIÈRES, winner of the 2003 season of the Ligue d’improvisation à l’orgue.

The Autumn Festival has also drawn praise for its interdisciplinary couplings. This year, it presents an evening of words and music, with previously unpublished texts by authors Nancy HUSTON and Howard BUTEN and music by two improv musicians, Freddy EICHELBERGER on organetto and Michel GODARD on serpent-tuba; a new take on the music of Bach in the style of Argentine tango with the acclaimed Montreal ensemble QUARTANGO, a vocal quartet and American organist Julian WACHNER; and the latest production by Gregory CHARLES: a divinely popular mass featuring a variety of musical styles such as African, Cuban, gospel and contemporary music with the PETITS CHANTEURS DE LAVAL, the St. Joseph Oratory’s organist Philippe BÉLANGER, and guest musicians.

Some of the top musicians from the Lanaudière region of Quebec have also been invited: organist and harpsichordist Luc BEAUSÉJOUR, violinist Olivier THOUIN, string orchestra LA SINFONIA DE LANAUDIÈRE and guest conductor André JUTRAS. The evening will take place under the honorary presidency of Father Fernand LINDSAY. A delightful tribute will be paid to musicians of the early 20th century and the bandstand concerts of yesteryear, with an ensemble under the direction of trombonist Alain TRUDEL. At the same concert, organist Danielle DUBÉ and wind quintet BEL CANTO will share the stage for the first Montreal performance of works by Canadian composers Sean FERGUSON and John BURGE.

Last but not least, to celebrate its fifth anniversary, the AUTUMN FESTIVAL ORGUE ET COULEURS will hold a FREE CONCERT on International Music Day, Wednesday, October 1, 2003, with diva Natalie CHOQUETTE and guest artists including organist Régis ROUSSEAU.

A detailed schedule can be found on our Website (www.orgueetcouleurs.com) and in the free official leaflet of the FIFTH FALL FESTIVAL ORGUE ET COULEURS, available in a number of public outlets and by mail, by request at (514) 899-0644.

The Regroupement indépendant des diffuseurs d’événements artistiques unis du Québec (RIDEAU) awarded ORGUE ET COULEURS its Initiative 2001 Award for the Autumn Festival and Initiative 2003 Award for the Ligue d’improvisation à l’orgue; Régis Rousseau was given the Opus Award 2002 as Artistic Director of the Year by the Conseil québécois de la musique. ORGUE ET COULEURS enjoys the support and cooperation of a number of partners including the Ministère des Affaires municipales, du Sport et des Loisirs, Canadian Heritage, Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, Fonds de stabilisation et de consolidation des arts et de la culture du Québec, Ville de Montréal, Conseil des arts de Montréal and du Maurier Arts Council.
